pronunciations-I've heard 'goran','gyyoran','yoran'and'GHoran'
The commonest form on British television is the third form 'yoran'-but I think that is probably due to an inability of British presenters to pronounce foreign words rather than it being the correct pronunciation.
Any Swedes able to tell us?
How is the 'g' in the Swedish name 'Goran'(as in Sven GORAN Erikson) pronounced? I've heard 4 different
It's the two dots over the "o" - 枚 - that defines the pronunciation. If they hadn't been there, the "g" would have been pronounced as goran, with a hard g-sound. But g before 枚 (with dots) is pronounced with a soft g-sound, like "y" in "yes".
However, the 枚 is not pronounced like o, but as the vowel in the English word "fur" or "sir".
The "a" is pronounced like the vowel in "fun".
The main stress is on the first vowel ("Yur"). But there is also a slight secondary stress on the last vowel ("un").
I once read about a Swedish man called G枚ran who was a speaker at a conference. He decided to introduce himself with a little joke about his difficult Swedish name, to get the attention of the audience. He meant to say "Hi! I am Goran with two dots." But the Swedish word for "dot" is prick, and in the stress of the moment he messed it up and introduced himself with "Hi! I am Goran with two pricks." He sure did get the attention of the audience, though!
So those two little dots are really important for pronunciation. o and 枚 are seen as two completely different letters in Swedish.
Reply:its yoran
Reply:G枚ran /yehran/ The g+枚=yeh; Goran /gohran/
g+ e, i , y ,盲,枚(soft vowel)="y "as in "yes"
g+ a, o, u ,a潞(hard vowel) or consonant= "g "as in "go"
Reply:As a Y - yoran

Swedish Names for Girls?
Lately I've been loving the names Malin Sofia and Annika Carolina (Malin and Annika are both of Swedish origin). What do you think of them? What other Swedish names would you suggest? Thanks!
Swedish Names for Girls?
Hello Chloe,
Most of the names that you have gotten as answers are used in Sweden and Scandinavia, but also are German and even Greek. So they are not really of Swedish Origin(s).
If you would like to see MANY Scandinavian names, where you can pick and choose, please see the link I have provided for you.
Good Luck!

Can anyone tell me how the Swedish name Lagerl枚f translates into English?
Lagerl枚f is an old distinguished name meaning "laurel leaf" or "bay leaf".
Although lager can mean "layer" or "storeroom/warehouse" it also means "laurel".
lagertr盲d = bay tree, laurel tree
lagerkrans = laurel wreath
lagerl枚f or lagerblad = laurel leaf or bay leaf
You can check out the various names asscoiated with the laurel tree here: http://www.shenet.se/vaxter/lager.html
By the way, Kilroy, if you really can speak Swedish then you should know that "I speak Swedish" is "jag pratar svenska" or "jag kan svenska" and not "jag prata svenska".
Can anyone tell me how the Swedish name Lagerl枚f translates into English?
Kilroy J is the one who's most right here, I'd say.
Lagerl枚f is an old name. You can tell by the f. And I don't see why people back then would have a name that was "storage room for leaves", or "of leaves". The "lager" that they mean is most likely layer. And "l枚f(l枚v)" means leaf.
So her name would be something like "Layer of leaves", "Layerleaf" if you want it word-for-word.
Reply:Lager can also mean 'layer' or 'sheet'
L枚f is a leaf (as in from a tree)
Could come from something to do with a 'layer of leaves'
Reply:Lager means repository or lair.

How do you correctly pronounce the Swedish name Jonatan?
My friend from Sweden is here in San Francisco and this will be my first time meeting him in person. His name is Jonatan, but I'm not sure how to correctly pronounce it. Is it like Jonathan without the H?
I'm thinking after the J it's a long O, like in Joe, and the "na" part is more like the sound of "net" and the "tan" part is more like "ten".
So I would call him Joe-netten, or Jonah-ten. Is this correct?
How do you correctly pronounce the Swedish name Jonatan?
I just listened to the name pronounced on the website that corneille suggested, and although the sounds are just about correct, it is stressed differently.
But for fun I looked on youtube and there are actually a few links where you can hear the name pronounced.
Don't heed the first pronunciation much, he's calling out, but the second and third are fine...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTjOsJgJ2...
Again, calling out, but you can hear it very clearly...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX3i3hhYW...
They're both poking a little fun, but at least you can hear the name right :-)
Reply:I don't speak the language, but if I were to guess i would say the 'j' as a 'y' sound in english (based on dutch names like jon, johannas, etc) but that is only a guess.
yon - a - tan would be my take j-on (like turn the switch on), i would say tan as tan and not ten.
Reply:In spanish from Argentina it would be:
sho nah tah n
Reply:hard to explain with words
Reply:Have you seen "Everything is Illuminated?"
"JAWNFEN."
Reply:Hi!
Some rules in pronouncing Swedish:
J sounds like English Y
O sounds more like English OO
(Long) A sounds closer to English AW
So "Jonatan" may be rendered like "Yoo-nah-tawn".
Good luck and have fun with the Swede!

Reply:I think the text-to-speech-engine below is very good.
It provides the right pronunciation.
I tested it in my own language, Dutch.
But you can also key in, English, French, Spanish, German,
Italian etc words, names, or even whole sentences.
Don't forget to choose the right voice (= language).
Sorry:
Because of some glitch I can't put the link here at the moment.
Just Google with "acapela demo" (in quotation marks)
and you'll find it immediately.
I checked 'Jonatan' with the Swedish Erik and Emma voices,
and the pronunciation is correct, seems to me :
It's very Swedish.
Hope this helps, and good luck!

What the "AB" in the end of Swedish companies names means? like Saab AB, Volvo AB etc.?
AB
Aktiebolag (literally "share company" or "stock company") is the Swedish term for "limited company" or "corporation". When used in company names, it is abbreviated "AB" (roughly equivalent to the abbreviations Ltd and PLC). The governmental authority responsible for registration of limited companies in Sweden is called Bolagsverket (the Swedish Companies Registration Office).

I know for sure that in French, it is called a 'Soci茅t茅 Anonyme' (SA)
I hope this could help ;-)

What are some Girls & Boys Scandanavian, German, Swedish or Swiss names (etc)?
Can anyone name to me any nice baby names for girls or boys with this kinda background in them???
examples- Greta, Uta, Saskia, Hans..
Thanks!
What are some Girls %26amp; Boys Scandanavian, German, Swedish or Swiss names (etc)?
Yep, click on one of the links given for Swedish names.
BUT be sure to check it here too:
http://www.svenskanamn.se/soknamn
S枚k namn means search name.
And just see if it's a common name in Sweden or not.
I used this link:
http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/swe.php
First name Acke.
Searched it on the site I gave.
Antal m盲n med namnet i Sverige: 156 / men with that name = 156
Antal kvinnor med namnet i Sverige: 0 / women "" = 0
Acke is a name I've never heard of and is not something anybody I know would identify with Sweden. So naming a kid Acke to get in touch with their roots is ridiculous. You see what I mean, right?
The easiest thing for you to do really is to make a list yourself and then ask people's opinions on it. Then people can tell you what is an acceptable name, what's unusual but still acceptable, and what's absolutely ridiculous.
I met an American called Odin for example... big NO. That's keeping in touch with your roots the wrong way. Odin is the chief God of Norse mythology, if you don't know. Naming after some Greek gods may be acceptable (Athena, etc) but how often do you come across someone called Zeus? It's the same here...
Odin will most likely be lol'd at in the US and it will definitely be lol'd at in Sweden. So people need to be careful when giving their children names with foreign roots. ;)
