pronunciations-I've heard 'goran','gyyoran','yoran'and'GHoran'


The commonest form on British television is the third form 'yoran'-but I think that is probably due to an inability of British presenters to pronounce foreign words rather than it being the correct pronunciation.

It's the two dots over the "o" - 枚 - that defines the pronunciation. If they hadn't been there, the "g" would have been pronounced as goran, with a hard g-sound. But g before 枚 (with dots) is pronounced with a soft g-sound, like "y" in "yes".





However, the 枚 is not pronounced like o, but as the vowel in the English word "fur" or "sir".





The "a" is pronounced like the vowel in "fun".





The main stress is on the first vowel ("Yur"). But there is also a slight secondary stress on the last vowel ("un").





I once read about a Swedish man called G枚ran who was a speaker at a conference. He decided to introduce himself with a little joke about his difficult Swedish name, to get the attention of the audience. He meant to say "Hi! I am Goran with two dots." But the Swedish word for "dot" is prick, and in the stress of the moment he messed it up and introduced himself with "Hi! I am Goran with two pricks." He sure did get the attention of the audience, though!





So those two little dots are really important for pronunciation. o and 枚 are seen as two completely different letters in Swedish.
